In the wake of Western sanctions on Russia over Ukraine, Russia looked to China to enhance economic ties, concluding ten years of negotiations with China on a new gas pipeline. On September 7, 2014, Russia launched the "Power of Siberia" project, a 4,000 km pipeline, stretching from gas fields of Yakutia to the Sea of Japan, to be used by Moscow to supply natural gas to China.
