The illicit drug trade is a primary source of funding for terrorists and extremist groups. Afghanistan accounts for 75% of heroin production and is host to two-thirds of the world's lands illegally used for the cultivation of opium poppy, namely in the Nangarhar province. Levels of production and trafficking have increased 1000% since 2001.
